Phuket is considered to be one of the world’s top ten scuba diving destinations, and it deserves its reputation. Many Phuket hotels and travel agencies will be happy to help you organize the diving adventure of your lifetime but where are the best places to go?
One of the most popular diving locations in Thailand is the Similian Islands. Since 1982, this group of islands has been made a National Park by the Thai Government, preventing damage and tourist development from spoiling their outstanding natural beauty. They offer a great selection of unusual marine wildlife, and coral reefs are to be found all around the Similian Islands. If you want to have easy access to the islands, you may wish to book a hotel in Khao Lak, which is an hour’s drive north of Phuket Airport. The islands themselves are approximately 50km west of the mainland, so people usually either go on day trips or choose to stay overnight on the islands themselves.
If you drive another 60 minutes north from Khao Lak you will have your choice of several superb diving islands. Surin Island, Richelieu Rock, Koh Tachai and Koh Bon are loosely grouped together, and offer some superb diving experiences that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Richelieu Rock is one of the few places is the world where you can find the gentle Whale Shark, while Ko Tachai and Koh Bon is the home of many Leopard Sharks and Manta Rays.
There are numerous diving opportunities to the south and south east of Phuket. if you wish to be close to the dive boats, booking a hotel on the south coast may be your best option. There are a wealth of great hotels available in Nai Harn, Rawai, Chalong, Cape Panwa and Phuket Town.

Directly to the south of Phuket are Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi. Koh Racha Yai offers the easier diving of the two islands, and has two stunning beaches on the north of the island, while Koh Rach Noi is great for more experienced divers – Reef Sharks, Stingrays and Manta Rays can all be found here.

To the south-east of Phuket, many boats leave from Rassada Pier near Phuket Town bound for the world-famous Phi Phi Islands. Some of the most stunningly beautiful scenery in the world is to be found here. Maya Bay was the location for the Hollywood blockbuster “The Beach”. The north island of Phi Phi Don has the Hin Dot dive site, where nurse sharks can be found. Most of Phi Phi’s diving is near the south island of Phi Phi Lee. Maya Bay is good for beginner and intermediate divers. To the east of Phi Phi Lee is Gareng Heng, a small underwater reef. To the south is the two small pair of islands known as Koh Bidah Nai and Koh Bidah Nok – both have a outstanding diversity of natural undersea wildlife. Ghost pipe fish, turtles, and even Pilot whales can be spotted.
